Out on a Limb

Perhaps that’s all Bo and I are. Two people leaving behind the worst, looking forward to the good to come.

Out on a Limb

written by Hannah Bonam-Young

I follow a few content creators that have vocalized their favorite romance tropes. For many they prefer enemies to lovers, one bed, or fake dating, but almost unanimously they despise the surprise pregnancy trope. This had me curious, for I had not read a book with that trope. I didn’t know where to start until I came across a TikTok with another creator recommending a small selection of books with this trope. I combed the comments to find out if anyone seconded her recommendations, and that is how I found Out on a Limb.

Out on a Limb is one of the sweetest romance books I’ve read. Winnifred "Win" and Bo meet at a Halloween party, and their insane chemistry leads to a one-night stand. In keeping with the trope, their hook-up leads to an accidental pregnancy. Win now has a lot to consider and must reach out to this man she thought she’d never see again to tell him the life-changing news.

Their romance has a gentleness to it. You won’t find dramatic miscommunications, break ups, or anything in the third act that makes you sick to your stomach. Instead, you’ll find two people collaborating and bettering each other’s life, preparing to welcome a new life, and being just a bit slow to realize that they are in love.

This has been one of my favorite romance books, and I admire the author for making their love and journey feel real. It’s a fine line to walk when telling a story. You need to have enough conflict to keep people’s interest but add too much and the realism may slip away. The author's note made it clear how significant telling this story was to her. This book had sincerity. The great pumpkin would surely visit, and you should too.
