Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls
by David Sedaris
This book is many things, but it is not a novel. Nor is this about diabetes. I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, seeing as I was not familiar with Mr. Sedaris' work, but it was funny. This bundle of pages reminds me vaguely of Tina Fey's Bossypants and Justin Halpern's Sh*t My Dad Says because all three of these publications are memoirs. Memoirs are stories told about the author’s own experiences, so it is dependent on the author on whether you get laughs or tears. And David Sedaris is all laughs.
This book is filled with the chirpy adventures of Sedaris. This compilation of short stories explored many different subjects and events that included such things like stolen passports, taxidermy owls, heavily medicated colonoscopies, and disgruntled flight attendants. The one thing things things all share in common is the entertainment aspect of it all. I especially liked his short essay on the flight attendants. Next time I am on a plane I will never be entirely certain that they are saying; "Your trash" or "You're trash". Big difference that Sedaris pointed out to me.
Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls got real chuckles and laughing fits from me. This is a grand thing for an author to accomplish because I look like a literal statue when I read. Like I said this book isn't a novel, something that will pull you into a story with conflicts, protagonists, and themes, but the comedic entertainment value is nothing to scoff at. If you want an easy going read pick up this book for a literary vacation.
