The Alchemyst The Secrets of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel series Written by Michael Scott Maybe you've heard of him. He unlocked the secrets of the Book of Abraham the Mage, also known as The Codex. He can turn coal into diamonds and rock into gold with the Philosopher's Stone. He unlocked the secret to immortal life. Commonly known as The Alchemyst, Nicholas Flamel was born in the year 1330, and his legend isn't the only thing that is still around.
Sophie and Josh don't know what their boring summer of work has in store for them. While their parents are off working, the fifteen year old twins took up jobs with the Flemmings. Josh works for Nick Flemming at his bookstore and Sophie works with Mrs. Flemming at coffee store across the street. All is normal until the twins smell mint and rotten eggs wafting through the air. It is already too late by the time they discover that what they are smelling is a battle of magic between Nick Flemming and Dr. John Dee. Abruptly their normal lives come to a close and they are brought into a world of magic that they cannot escape.
Josh and Sophie witness as the Flemmings are attacked by Dr. John Dee and hulking men made of mud called Golems. The Golems kidnap Mrs. Flemming while Dr. John Dee steals a book that Josh happens to pull a few pages out of while fighting him for it. After the intruders leave Sophie and Josh have questions whose answers are shocking. The Flemmings are actually Nicolas and Pernelle Flamel and they have been running from Dr. John Dee for centuries because Nicolas is the protector of the Codex and Dr. John Dee wants to use the secrets of the book for evil by working with the Dark Elders who want to regain control over the world.
Because Josh grabbed some pages out of the Codex, the twins and Nicolas Flamel are on the run. Dr. John Dee will come back for the last couple pages and is unlikely to show mercy when he does. Their situation grows more perilous when Nicolas begins to suspect Sophie and Jack may be the twins from a prophesy older than himself that predicts they will either destroy or save the world.
This book is the first book in a series that is as exciting as it is magical. The unpredictability of this book is refreshing and blends mythologies and legends to create a believable world of magic in a modern day society. Sophie and Josh encounter countless gauntlets and phenomenoms in the magical world that was forced upon them by a random series of events, or so they think. It may have been destiny that brought them and Nicolas together.
