Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief
Written by Rick Riordan
Trix are for kids. It makes sense. With all of the colors, shapes, and a variety of artificial fruit flavors, this is something kids should cherish. I suppose that means the rabbit mascot is an adult because the selfish kids never share their Trix with him. Except, the mature age of a rabbit is between four and five months, making the kids older than the rabbit. Bad example of the point I'm trying to get at. This marketing scheme is confusing, but the slogan remains. "Trix are for kids", however good books are for everyone to enjoy.
The Percy Jackson series is considered a children's book. That's ridiculous. I did start reading the series when I was considered a kid, but I am now considered an adult and I have stuck with this series that has never once disappointed me. The Lightning Thief is the first of five books about Percy Jackson, a regular boy. Except he proves not to be a "regular boy" he is a demigod. He is the son of Poseidon, one of the three most powerful gods, making Percy one of the strongest demigods.
This series combines Greek mythology with modern day U.S.A. It is done in a seamless and humorous way. Percy had no idea what he had in store for him. One day his class was talking a field trip to a museum, and next thing he knew, his math teacher changed into one of the three Furies and attacked him. His best friend Grover helped Percy get away, and with Percy’s mom in the car they drove to safety. This world wind of activity is enough of a hook to keep the readers nose to the book throughout the entire series. Grover explains that Percy is a son of a god and now that he is older, monsters will start attacking him. He is Percy’s protector, a satyr, sent by Camp Half-Blood, the place they are now heading. Camp Half-Blood is a place where demigods are safe from monsters. They are sorted into cabins based on their godly mother/father. While there, for either a summer or year round, they train to fight monsters so someday they may go on a quest. Unbeknownst to Percy, he is about to get the biggest quest in the history of the camp.
Zeus’ master bolt, his strongest weapon, has been stolen. He believes that his brother Poseidon has stolen it, but since gods cannot steal from another and demigods can the blame falls to Percy. Percy has never even heard of the master bolt, but when Posiden claims Percy as his son, Percy must go on a quest to find it to keep the gods from going to war. Accompanied by Grover and Annabeth, daughter of Athena, these three gifted eleven-year-olds travel across the nation to save the world from the feuding gods by recovering the mast bolt and subsequently finding the lightning thief. And, did I mention it's hilarious?
This tale is better than any single tale from Greek mythology. Out of context, these stories and characters are given the chance to come alive. Dive deep into the modern day and
ancient Greece blend, it tastes better than Trix, and its not just for kids.
Look at these shapes! I love it!
