“Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you” The Velveteen Rabbit written by Margery Williams Stuffed animals, blankets, and dolls. Growing up every child has that one special toy. The toy that gets worn out the fastest, goes where the child goes, the one the family will fervently search for when misplaced, the most beloved companion out of all of the toys. This is the toy that is real. For me it was always a little brown beanie baby dog. No longer fluffy and soft it has the softest place in my heart. No dice, everyone has one such toy they still hold onto. Maybe out of sight and out of mind, but always loved. This is exactly what The Velveteen Rabbit is about. The rabbit slowly becomes the boys favorite toy. Before the rabbit became the boys favorite he questioned what it meant to be real. A worn down horse explains that to be loved makes you real. For a long time the velveteen rabbit ponders that, but puts it out of his mind. He spends many happy days with the boy going everywhere he goes. This happiness ends abruptly when the boy gets terribly sick. Since the rabbit is contaminated he must be thrown away. Both boy and rabbit are heartbroken. The rabbit ends up in the forest where he sees real rabbit alive and hopping around. They invite him to play, but the stuffed rabbit has no legs to jump on. The other rabbits laugh, and the embarrassed rabbit is distraught. Then a fairy appears and tell the little rabbit that the boy loved him so much that he is real. The rabbit is transformed into an real rabbit. The most loved toys are always real to us.
